Dr Lance Thompson

MBChB(UCT) FCA (SA)

 

Dr Lance Thompson joined Southern Anaesthetics as a full time associate on the 1st August 2014.

 

Lance obtained his MBChB in 1995 from the University of Cape Town (UCT). He then worked at Edendale Hospital, KZN, where he completed his internship, followed by a year each as a Paediatric and Anaesthetic Medical Officer. He obtained Diplomas in Child Health and Anaesthesia during this time. After further Paediatric and Anaesthetic experience in Jersey, Channel Islands, Lance underwent his Anaesthetic registrar training, initially in Durban, before completing his studies at UCT. He was awarded the Fellowship of the College of Anaesthesiologists in 2004.

 

Lance then spent two years as a consultant Anaesthesiologist at Groote Schuur and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals, after which he completed a Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia in Sydney, Australia. Further Anaesthetic travels have seen him move temporarily to the United Kingdom, before returning to Cape Town in 2011.

 

Lance enjoys all the facets of Anaesthesia, and has a particular interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia and the use of ultrasound for vascular access and regional Anaesthesia. Lance has been a very successful course convenor for the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA) Western Cape Ultrasound Workshops, and is an honorary senior lecturer at the UCT Department of Anaesthesia.

 

Lance is married to Bronwyn and they have a son and a daughter. He enjoys surfing, hiking and running.
