Dr Peter Marwick

MBChB(Stell) DA(SA) FCA(SA) MMed

Dr Peter Marwick joined Southern Anaesthetics in December 2016.

Peter was schooled in Bloemfontein at Grey College, before obtaining his MBChB at Stellenbosch in 2000. After internship and his community service he worked in England and Scotland in Emergency medicine and Cardiothoracic surgery. Peter returned to South Africa in 2005, and after he obtained his DA(SA) Anaes in Pietermaritzburg in 2006, he started his Registrar Training at Stellenbosch - completing his FCA(SA) in 2010 and MMed (Anaesthesiology and Critical Care) in 2010.

Peter has been working as a Consultant: Stellenbosch Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and Tygerberg Hospital since 2011, where he has developed interests in cardiac and thoracic anaesthesia, major abdominal and bariatric anaesthesia, and the use of (Target controlled infusions)TCI and its application in sedation. He also enjoys major orthopaedics and upper limb blocks, neuro- and spinal surgery, urology, ENT and difficult airways. Peter is published both locally and internationally, and is a speaker at regional and national South African Society of Anaesthesiologist (SASA) congresses, and recently presented at the World Congress of Anaesthesiology in Hong Kong in August 2016.

He is a FCA(SA) final exam college examiner, and a supervisor of numerous MMed theses. He served previously on SASA national council and ended his term as the public service business unit convener on SASA council. Peter is now the incumbent chairman of the SASA Western Cape branch.

Peter describes himself as a "born and bred Freestater”, and a long-suffering Cheetahs supporter. He is partial to good wine should the opportunity present itself, and otherwise enjoys attempts at woodwork, DIY and nerdy pursuits like computers and academics with the time he can salvage between work and family. Peter’s wife Debbie is an Ophthalmologist, and they have two young daughters Rachael and Amélie.
