Dr Rohan Pretorius

Dr Rohan Pretoriusjoined Southern Anaesthetics on the 18thSeptember 2017.


Rohan was born in Port Elizabeth, grew up in Cape Town, and obtained his MBChB degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 2002. He then completed his Internship and Community service at Bethlehem Regional hospital. During this time in the Free State he obtained his Diploma in Anaesthesia.


He subsequently moved to the UK for a year where he worked as a Medical officer in Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care. However, warmer weather beckoned, and he moved to rural Australia where he spent the next eight years of his career working as a General Practitioner and GP Anaesthetist while obtaining his Family Medicine Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). 


Rohan returned to South Africa in 2013 and joined the University of Cape Town’s Anaesthetic Department where he completed his Fellowship of the College of Anaesthesiologists FCA (SA) and his MMed in Anaesthesia. During this time he was awarded the prize for the best Paediatric and the best Intensive Care Registrar in Anaesthesia. 


Rohan enjoys all facets of Anaesthesia, but has a particular interest in Peri-operative medicine, Paediatric Anaesthesia, ENT, difficult airways, ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia and procedural sedation. Pain medicine and the management of chronic pain has also been a long-standing interest of his, stemming from his time spent in general practice.


Rohan is married to Zarine and they have 3 young boys. He is a keen fisherman, hiker and camper, and enjoys spending quality time with his family.
