Dr Adri Marais to join Southern Anaesthetics

Southern Anaesthetics is proud to announce that Dr Adri Marais will be joining the practice on the 1st of June 2022.

Adri grew up in the Western Cape, matriculating with distinction (as dux scholar) at Overberg High School in 1999. She attended the University of Stellenbosch where she graduated MBChB in 2005.

Adri completed her internship at The Red Cross War Memorial Hospital in Cape Town and her community service at Themba Hospital in Mpumalanga. She did some travelling and worked as a training registrar in the emergency department in Sligo General Hospital, Ireland. After that she worked as a general practice anaesthetist in Windhoek, Namibia. She returned to

South Africa and completed additional medical officer training in anaesthesia at Worcester Hospital where she obtained the Diploma in Anaesthesiology (DA) in 2008. She continued her medical officer training in anaesthesia at Victoria Hospital and successfully completed the part 1 of the Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetist of South Africa (FCA) in 2010.

Adri joined the UCT Anaesthesia training program in January 2011 where she excelled in all departments. She was part of the first group of registrars that were required to complete an MMed dissertation and successfully completed and published a double blinded randomised control study in regional pain management (The use of ultrasound-guided plane blocks for total abdominal hysterectomy:a double-blind,controlled trial.SAJAA.2014). She also received awards for “Registrar’s Research Prize” in 2013 and “Best Registrar CardioThoracic Anaesthesia” in 2013. Adri became a Fellow of the College of Anaesthetist of South Africa in 2015.

Adri took up a consultant post at the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at UCT after completing her training before going into private practice in 2018 in the Southern and Northern suburbs of Cape Town. She enjoys all aspects of anaesthesia, but is passionate about regional anaesthesia and perio-operative pain control.

Adri is married and has two beautiful boys. She is committed to maintaining a balanced lifestyle outside of her medical career. She enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends and keeping physically fit and active. She shares her husband’s interest in beer brewing (and tasting) and loves reading and spending relaxing time with her loved ones.
